How RegLantern is Working Toward Sustainability and Carbon Footprint Reduction
Tackling the formidable problem of climate change is going to take the effort of all of us if we want to leave a livable planet for our grandchildren. “It’s now or never, if we want to limit global warming to 1.5°C (2.7°F),” said Jim Skea, an IPCC leader in April 2023, . “Without immediate and deep emissions reductions across all sectors, it will be impossible.” At RegLantern, we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and embracing a greener future. Together, we can make a positive impact on the planet.
Why are we committed to this effort? Though there are many reasons, one of the biggest is our commitment to the work of community health centers and the people they serve. Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) are commissioned to provide health care to the vulnerable and marginalized communities of our country. Our changing climate will exacerbate numerous public health crises and will affect us all. But it will not affect us all equally. Health centers work and thrive in that very space: The intersection of health and equity. And though we are not directly providing care to patients on the “frontlines”, we want to support our country’s health centers and their mission by playing our part in reducing our contribution to the changing climate.
Major Areas We Focus On
-
RegLantern is an annual supporter of Green Umbrella, a leading organization dedicated to promoting sustainability in our Greater Cincinnati region. By partnering with us, you contribute to initiatives such as reforestation projects, renewable energy adoption, and environmental education, amplifying our collective impact.
-
RegLantern empowers its employees to make sustainable choices. Through our reimbursement program, employees can receive up to five thousand dollars when they invest in solar panels or electric vehicles for their homes. By embracing cleaner energy solutions, our team contributes to the global fight against climate change.
-
RegLantern believes in responsible investment strategies. Our employee 401k plan has been designed by our RegLantern leadership to include options that are rated as “A+” investments through FossilFreeFunds.org, signifying that the fund is not invested in fossil fuels and has been screened in other areas as board diversity, ethical labor practices, and more. These options allow our employees to invest with purpose and reduce their ecological impact.
-
RegLantern embraces remote work for its employees to minimize carbon emissions from commuting. In addition, RegLantern provides its virtual services to our customers as often as possible to reduce emissions from air travel, a source of roughly 2.5% of global CO2 emissions. When air travel is required, RegLantern purchases carbon offsets through CoolEffect to reduce the harm caused by the travel.
-
A commonly overlooked contributor to climate change in the internet and software development. Though difficult to estimate, some say the internet is responsible for about 3.7% of global emissions. There is a movement to “decarbonize” the internet as much as possible and we have chosen to develop and host our website on a platform that is identified as a “Green Host” by The Green Web Foundation. These server organizations run on 100% renewable energy.
